Here in New Orleans, when ever we meet someone new, we always ask where that person ‘went to school’. We mean high school, and it is a way of discovering connection--a way of finding out who we know in common.
But, the question doesn’t work very well for people my age any more. Our friends have left the state. Out of my high school graduating class from St. Martin’s of 54, only 18 remain in Louisiana. And, more are leaving every day.
That’s why I decided to run for the legislature. I am sick of watching talented men and women think that they have to move just to make a living. My campaign has one major theme: providing opportunities so our kids don’t have to leave just to find a decent job.
